We have recently published an article in the Tayside and Fife Archaeological Journal which discusses a site from Angus, Scotland. CFA recorded (among others) Neolithic structures, a ring-ditch house, and a ring-groove house. Pottery from the site dated from the Early Neolithic (c. 3500BC) to the Bronze Age (mid-late 2000BC), giving us a good idea of its Prehistoric origins. We found a variety of stone and flint artefacts, ranging from Neolithic worked flint to Iron Age hammerstones.
Of special note was a grinding stone/quernstone and grinder/pounder. The smaller grinder stone had evidence of ‘pecking’ on either end and a polished look to the flatter surface, showing that it was used to crush or grind something. The larger, ‘dish-shaped’ grinding stone has smooth patches inside, where things have been ground against it, although it still has quite a lot of roughness, suggesting that it wasn’t used heavily.
