A Dragonesque Brooch from Wetherby

Written by

Dr Elizabeth Foulds and Harry Francis

Date

July 2023

Location

Land off Walton Road, Wetherby, West Yorkshire

This work discusses a Romano-British 'dragonesque', or dragon-shaped, brooch decorated with red and blue enamel. While many brooches of this type are known from England, ours was found in a securely stratified deposit (an enclosure ditch, in this instance) which allowed for closer consideration of its date of origin as well as the context of its deposition. Although they appear Celtic in style, this type of brooch is mostly dated to the post-conquest period - could it be an interesting continuation of art and culture? Or perhaps a rebellious statement by a people who didn't wish to become Romanised?
