Moray East Offshore Wind Farm
Project type
Archaeological Watching Brief and Excavation
Date
2018-2019
Location
Aberdeenshire
Client
Moray East & Natural Power
Archaeological works for the Moray East Cable Route, developed as part of the Moray East Offshore Wind farm, were undertaken by CFA Archaeology on behalf of Natural Power. This project required a team of archaeologists to work on a watching brief for 11 months, monitoring works along a 33km cable route, as well as a series of smaller targeted excavations.
Many archaeological discoveries were found, excavated, and recorded with no delay to the contractor’s programme of works.
One of the most exciting discoveries was a souterrain. Souterrains are Iron Age underground cellars, usually found in eastern Scotland, and are stone or timber-lined. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be found both with and without an associated house or other structure. Our souterrain was deliberately infilled, closing it off after it was no longer in use.
